PENSOLE Project
Pensole Footwear Design School was a ten-day program, under the instruction of the former Brand Jordan Creative Director D’Wayne Edwards. Each student worked on an individual project based on a specific theme. I was assigned to design a pair of travel shoes—unisex, 3 sizes fit all, expandable, breathable, light weight and low cost. Students in this program were expected to do research, mind-mapping, sketching, final pencil rendering and presentation with exhibit board.

The goal of this project is to design a pair of low-cut light-weight basketball shoes for guards. Inspired by butterflies, I created a ‘wing upper’ system equipped with Nike FlyWire technology in order to provide both light weight and durability.

The inspiration of this design came from Chinese Chess. Aspects of the shoe relate to the grid and boundary of the chess board, the shape of a single chess piece, the nobiilty of the ‘soldiers’ on the board, the asymmetrical strategy needed to win the game, and even the material from which the board and chess pieces are made.

This design started with the 3 stripes at the heel, followed by exploration of the upper, toe and details. The idea of this concept is that energy originates from the heel and flows to the toe of the shoe, inspiring the name Impulse.

Each game is a show. When the performance of a player is brilliant, the audience will call for an encore.
The curtain rises on the sole, and the wrinkles project upon the upper. Classic style upper, and light weight performance? It’s showtime.

Shoes for ladies need to be fashionable and bright enough to attract attention. Colors, form and graphics are all important for women’s shoe design. The sharp tip of the outsole was inspired by a modern shoe to imply fashion; the structure emulates a thong for the silicone strap to imply sexiness; the white suede toe protector inspired by a white puppy’s paw to provide cuteness; and color scheme, graphics and name from a beautiful flower: lavender.

A cool breeze touches your skin, starting at your toes.
Climacool, mid-cut, light weight, mild color palette, and three stripes flow along your feet. They cool down this design for the summer.

A project for a design contest held by Reebok and LM. To indicate the features of ZigTech and Rally Fighter, I combined driving & running experiences. Nylon mesh on the top to keep dirt and sand out, and a neoprene layer at the bottom to offer protection. Fuse print on the nylon mesh to ensure light weight, and punched holes in the neoprene to conduct heat. Heel counter and secondary upper exhibit racing features.
